Pioneering the future of English language teaching with Blue Dot

In early 2025, we introduced Blue Dot, an exciting English language teaching course for young learners that reflects a growing emphasis on concept-based and interdisciplinary learning.
More than just a new course, Blue Dot represents a pioneering methodology as the first ever concept-based inquiry plus ELT course of its kind. It encourages students to become confident communicators and independent thinkers, engaging with language through investigations into conceptual ideas.
At the heart of Blue Dot is a teaching method called concept-based inquiry. This means that students learn English by exploring broad, meaningful themes like sustainability, identity, and creativity. Instead of just memorizing vocabulary or grammar rules, learners ask questions, investigate ideas, and make connections across subjects. This helps them become more confident speakers and more curious, independent thinkers.
Each unit concludes with the articulation of a generalization which students form as a result of their investigations into a concept. Each module concludes with a call to action, encouraging students to apply their learning in ways that are relevant to their lives and communities.
Alicia Smith, Portfolio Product Manager of Primary, said:
“Blue Dot represents a significant leap forward in English language teaching. By integrating concept-based inquiry with language learning, we are equipping young learners with the skills they need to navigate and shape an ever-changing world.”

The course was developed in collaboration with educators experienced in concept-based inquiry, ensuring that the materials are grounded in real classroom practice. It also incorporates translanguaging strategies, where multiple languages are honoured and addressed, recognizing the diverse linguistic backgrounds of learners and encouraging them to draw on their full language skills. This collaborative effort has results in an innovative approach to language education, with a course designed to create the changemakers of tomorrow.
In addition, Blue Dot introduces Oxford learner profiles which are designed to support the development of skills such as adaptability, collaboration, and ethical decision-making. These profiles aim to prepare students for a future shaped by rapid technological and social change by understanding that different skills are needed in different situations.
The course also addresses contemporary issues such as climate change, misinformation, and digital literacy, offering age-appropriate opportunities for learners to engage with complex topics and develop analytical skills.
As part of our broader commitment to innovation in pedagogy, Blue Dot shows how language learning can be more than just learning a language, it can be a way to explore the world and grow as a person.
