Sensus Impacta new initiative to enhance reporting and demonstrate the impact of research supported by fundershas launched.

Pioneered by our academic publishing experts in collaboration with more than 30 organizations, and brought to life by technology leaders Silverchair, this initiative will provide funders, publishers, and authors with unparalleled access to impact data.

At the initiative’s core is a new platform that collates and centralizes information about research impact, including citation, usage, and attention data. By combining high-quality data from a range of sources, such as Altmetric, the platform will provide funders with unique insight into the performance of the research they fund.

Through connecting the academic community with these metrics within a single platform, Sensus Impact will address the challenge of a fragmented measurement and reporting environment for funders, with various impact metrics currently existing in many different locations.

Speaking about the value of Sensus Impact our Vice President of Journals, Alison Denby, said:

“Solving industry-wide challenges requires a collaborative, industry-led approach. By engaging in initiatives like Sensus Impact, both funders and publishers can enhance their ability to showcase and assess the impact of funded research. This increased transparency in academic publishing will help drive ambition for high-impact and influential research, which is fundamentally what we are all here to do.”

As a community-led initiative, Sensus Impact is developed by and for the academic community, which is why it’s supported by an engaged Community of Practice. This community includes publishers, funders, and learned societies, and will continue to play a key role in shaping the future of the platform.

The launch of Sensus Impact marks a significant milestone, with 18 funder hubs already onboard, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Smithsonian Institute. We look forward to seeing many others benefit from this industry-first initiative.
