OUP India unveiled its latest academic legal title, Law, Justice, Society: Selected Works of Upendra Baxi, at a celebratory event held at the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi, in March. The four-volume collection pays tribute to the career of Professor Upendra Baxi, one of India’s most prominent legal scholars.

Professor Baxi is an Emeritus Professor of Law at the Universities of Warwick and Delhi. During his career, he has held positions such as Professor and Dean at the University of Delhi, Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University and the University of South Gujarat, and has also taken on leadership roles at the Indian Law Institute and the Indian Society of International Law.

Known for his contributions to human rights, constitutional law, and legal theory, Professor Baxi’s work has shaped the landscape of legal thought in India and beyond. This new curated collection spans four decades of his work, containing essays and lectures that explore critical themes such as human rights, constitutionalism, law and society, and legal education. Each volume provides insights into Professor Baxi’s research, his influential ideas, and their enduring impact on the field.

Speaking at the launch event, Professor Baxi said: “I deeply appreciate the immense dedication of the editors who have devoted nearly a generation to these four volumes. Their careful selection of articles, themes, and discussions aims to make my writings more relevant to the present and future generations. I wished them luck then and I wish them luck now in their noble endeavour. I hope these volumes encourage meaningful engagement with the ever-evolving discourse on law, justice, and society.”

The launch event was attended by Honourable Mrs. Justice B.V. Nagarathna of the Supreme Court of India, alongside dignitaries from the Bar Council, Additional Solicitor Generals, judges, vice-chancellors, faculty members from leading law universities, and students from the Indian Law Institute.

The editors of the collection, Amita Dhanda (Professor Emerita, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad), Arun K. Thiruvengadam (Professor of Law, National Law School of India University, Bengaluru), and Kalpana Kannabiran (Distinguished Professor, Council for Social Development, New Delhi) also attended the event.
